Churchill County Walking TrailIt was in the late 1820’s that the first explorers started to visit this vast land.  The first permanent settlement in the area was called “Ragtown” and the county, named after Mexican War hero, brevet Brigadier General Sylvester Churchill, was formed in 1861. One of the early farms in the County was owned by a man named Mike Fallon, who the town is named after.   He set up a Post Office in 1869 near what is now West Williams Avenue.

In addition to the area’s rich, western heritage, the Lahontan Valley wetlands located in and around Fallon are widely recognized as among the most significant wetland systems in the American West, attracting more than 250,000 shorebirds and more than a million waterfowl.

Agriculture is one of the principal pillars of the economy of Churchill County. Water for irrigation comes from the Newland’s Project, the first federal reclamation project in the United States. The area’s main agricultural crops continue to be alfalfa, corn silage and award-winning “Hearts O’ Gold” cantaloupe. The area also has a number of dairies producing quality milk, butter and cheese.  Horses, cattle and sheep are also raised for sale.

Fallon with its surrounding countryside is a truly green and lush agricultural and cultural haven in the desert, earning the town its nickname,“Oasis of Nevada”.
