Nevada is planning to submit a waiver application to the US Department of Education, seeking flexibility from some requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act, or NCLB. The Churchill County High School Music Program of Fallon, Nevada Is a Winner in
"Glee Give a Note Contest"

Fallon, NV (December 15, 2011)-The Churchill County High School (CCHS) Music Program was announced as one of the winners in the "Glee Give a Note Contest" presented by Twentieth Century Fox Television, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, and the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) and its new Give a Note Foundation. The "Glee Give a Note" campaign, started over 3 months ago, will distribute $1 million to 73 schools nationwide in grants ranging from $10,000 to $50,000 to help save struggling music programs. 

Tom Fleming, who teaches choral music at CCHS, organized the 100% student-made 2-minute video entry which was chosen the winner from among hundreds of entries nationwide.  "We feel honored to have been selected one of the winners," Fleming said.  "Winning the award says a lot about the will and creativity of our students here in Fallon.  It wasn't long ago that we were talking about cutting much of the music program in our school district.  Many students, parents and community members rallied to keep that from happening.  We take a lot of pride in the arts here in Fallon.  The video really demonstrates that.  I think this really came through to the judges of the contest."

Fleming pointed out that the award is for the entire music program to use, instrumental and choral.  "The money we get to support choral music will go toward much-needed uniforms," Fleming said.

Students at CCHS were among thousands across the country who created submissions in video form during an open call for entries in September. In October, the eligible entries were posted on www.GleeGiveANote.com and put up for public vote for one month. During this time, students conducted massive grass roots efforts to win votes for their schools, reaching out to their families, friends and communities to get the vote out.  Word quickly spread through Facebook, Twitter and local newsletters and over one million votes were cast to help choose the finalists.  A panel composed of NAfME (National Association for Music Educators) members conducted a final round of judging and, together with the public vote, determined the winning programs. 

The 2-minute CCHS video may still be viewed on-line at www.gleegiveanote.com.  The video features Fleming's choir performing the "Glee" version of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'."  One of Fleming's students provides a voice-over as the students perform describing the community and why the school music program needs and deserves to win the cash prize.

"Music education plays such a critical role in the development of our children, yet its place in our schools is not assured due to dire budget situations across the nation," said Michael A. Butera, executive  director of the National Association for Music Education. "Bold and generous acts, like FOX's Glee Give a Note campaign, validate its importance and bring a sense of hope to thousands of educators and students.  We are deeply grateful for the funding and awareness this campaign has created."

Churchill County School District Utilizing the Old High School Building on Maine Street to Implement the Middle School Concept at CCJHS

Every day hundreds of our diverse, rapidly changing young adolescents make critical and complex life decisions and form attitudes, values and dispositions that will direct their behavior as adults, according to the authors of This We Believe, National Middle School Association. This and other invaluable literature is being used as we plan our next steps at determining service models for the middle school concept being implemented in the 2012-2013 school year.

Just a few goals of middle grades teachers for their students included in this National Middle School Association publication includes:

• Become actively aware of the larger world, asking significant and relevant questions about that world and wrestling with the big ideas and questions for which there may be more than one right answer.Be able to think rationally and critically and express thoughts clearly. 
• Read deeply to independently gather, assess, and interpret information from a variety of sources and read avidly for enjoyment and lifelong learning.
• Use digital tools to explore, communicate, and collaborate with the world and learn from the rich and varied resources available.
• 
  Be a good steward of the earth and its resources and a wise and intelligent consumer of the wide array of goods and services available.

With Churchill County High School (CCHS) needing strong support to continue their strides to greater student performance, CCSD has implemented several strategies to strengthen student achievement that can strengthen student success at CCHS. Implementing smaller learning communities mandated by NRS in both the junior high and high school is an innovation that has started this year.

CCSD Administration is planning a state-of-the-art Town Hall Meeting at Lahontan Elementary School on Thursday, November 17, at 6:30 p.m. Technology will be set-up for Twitter, FaceBook and other social media. Mr. Roger Diedrichsen, former teacher and school board member, will be the moderator for this interactive session designed to get input and listen to concerns of middle school students and their families. The efforts of the CCJHS teachers implementing the smaller learning communities' strategies, where teachers teach the same students for core areas, as well as the Fellows program at CCHS, will be recognized during this Town Hall meeting. A panel of District employees with an expertise in middle school concept will answer questions and share information. CCJHS Principal Kimi Melendy and middle school advocate and Principal of E. C. Best Elementary School Keith Boone have been working with critical staff for over a year to learn and share information regarding the middle school concept.

Renovation of the Old High School building located on Maine Street for the middle school is on schedule with the planned opening of the middle school. The demolition and abatement processes have been completed. The architect pre-qualification process is taking place. CCSD Administration is planning a Town Hall meeting on December 1st, at Lahontan Elementary School to update the community regarding the design and delivery of district-wide services at the Old High School building.
