Is your operating system up to date?
Computers need updates to help protect your computer from virus and malware attacks and loss of data or Identity theft. It is not the ONLY way to stay protected, but it is one of the most common ways people get into trouble. If your computer is not kept up to date with the latest patches and updates, then what those patches and updates fix are a way for your computer to be compromised.
Thankfully Windows and iOS do most of the work for you behind the scenes and keeps an eye for anything new needed for your computer.
Windows 10: Go to the Start button or Windows button at the bottom left of the screen and left click on it.
Then go up to Settings and left click on that.
When this opens up, the last thing listed is Windows updates, left click on it.
First thing listed here is Windows updates
Left click on Check for updates.
Windows will start to see If there are any needed and if there are any updates that are available it will start downloading and then install them.
With Windows 10 there have been problems with some of the big updates that they call Spring Creators updates or Fall Creators updates. As the name implies, these are major updates done twice a year. There are many updates done all year long but these are what used to be called Service Packs. There have been some customers that have run into problems with these due to small hard drives, or they simply have too much on their hard drive and the Creator updates can’t download or install. If you are unable to free up space, or not sure what is going on, please bring your computer into our repair shop and we can get this done.
If you have a laptop that only has a 32gb hard drive, it would be time to start thinking about getting either a newer computer or a bigger hard drive in the computer. There have been several that I have dealt with that are tricky to get the updates on computers with such small hard drives. They are generally laptops that are less expensive, and this is a main reason. I recommend hard drives of at least 500gb in any computer.
For Windows 10 users, a quick way to see what version of Windows 10 you have, go to the search box at the bottom on the taskbar on the left side and type winver and hit enter.
This will start up a program that will tell you what version of Windows 10 you have.
For more on this, please go to this page that already explains Windows 10 version information. http://www.cccomm.net/newsView.aspx?id=1657
iOS: Go to the Apple at the top left side and click on it.
Next click on Software Update…
If there are any updates available it will show what they are in a window like this.
If you just click on the button on the right Update All then the computer will install all updates that are available. If there are several updates and you are looking to update a few programs and not Update All, then you can go down the list and choose the ones you want to update.
